The Old Way

Activities that entertain
but don't transform.

Sports teach physical skills, not self-control or respect

Tutoring improves grades temporarily, not confidence or leadership

Quick motivation fades. No pressure-tested structure that builds lasting discipline

Without character development, any improvement vanishes when motivation does

Parents don't just want their children busy. They want them better.

capability. Every class.

Stop being bullied, without throwing a single punch. Verbal confidence first.

Raise their grades, the same focus built on the mat transfers directly to homework time

Who Is James Martial Arts Academy?

James Martial Arts Academy is El Cajon's family-owned martial arts school — founded in 2010 by Sigung Darryl James, trusted by 500+ families across East County San Diego, with six programs for ages 3 through adult.

We are not a franchise. Sigung James teaches alongside his family. And your child is treated like one of their own. There is one chief instructor, one lineage, and one standard: your child walks out of every class more focused, more confident, and more themselves than when they walked in.

Laser Focus
Watch grades improve as your child develops the ability to concentrate. Skills that transfer from the mat to the classroom.
Confident Self-Defense
Sleep better knowing your child can protect themselves, physically, mentally, and verbally.
Real Self-Esteem
Your child earns each belt through genuine achievement — not participation trophies. That difference shows.
Leadership & Respect
Your child naturally takes on responsibility and becomes someone younger students look up to.
Goal-Setting Mastery — The confidence that colleges & employers actually notice
The belt system teaches your child to set goals, work consistently, and celebrate earned victories. Our average student stays 3+ years. Because it works.

He founded James Martial Arts Academy in El Cajon in 2010. Since then, over 500 families from El Cajon, Santee, La Mesa, and Lakeside have trusted him with their children's training. He knows every student's name, rank, and what they're working through. Inside the dojo and out.

How We Train · The Martial Arts Path

Every class builds more
than technique.

Most programs hand your child a uniform and start counting reps. We build the complete person: from physical confidence to focus under pressure to the self-mastery that shows up at school, at home, and in every challenge ahead. Our four-pillar progression is designed so each stage unlocks the next. None can be bought. None can be skipped.

Step 01

Foundations & Core Skills

Stance, posture, and focused power, drilled until the body responds without hesitation. Your child learns that mastery starts with fundamentals, not shortcuts.

What your child gains:

Physical coordination, the habit of doing hard things without quitting, and the confidence that comes from genuine skill. Not empty praise.

Step 02

Movement Patterns & Memory

Structured movement sequences that encode centuries of self-defense wisdom. Students learn why every movement exists. Not just how to perform it.

What your child gains:

Deep focus, long-term memory skills, and the discipline to see a complex task through from beginning to end. Teachers notice.

Step 03

Controlled Partner Training

Where technique meets real pressure. Age-appropriate, always supervised. This is where your child learns to stay calm, think clearly, and act decisively under stress.

What your child gains:

Emotional regulation under pressure, real self-defense capability, and the unshakeable confidence that only comes from having been tested. Not just told they're good.

Step 04

Calm, Clear & Unshakeable

The goal of everything that came before: a student who acts without hesitation or fear. Not because they've never been afraid. Because they've trained beyond it.

What your child gains:

The ability to handle real-life pressure with composure. The kind of young person who stays calm when others panic. In school, in sports, and in life.

What to Expect · Your First Visit

We know what it's like
to walk into a
dojo for the first time.

Most parents don't know what to expect. That uncertainty is exactly why we designed your first visit to be zero-pressure, completely transparent, and — honestly — kind of amazing for your child. Here's what happens, step by step.

Common first-visit concerns we hear:

"My child is shy." "They've never done sports." "I'm not sure it's the right fit." "My kid is nervous."

We hear these every week. Every one of them is normal. And every one of them has been said by a parent whose child is now one of our most confident students.

01
You Arrive — We Greet You by Name

When you walk in, you're not a prospect. You're a guest. We'll know your name and your child's name before you arrive. There's no paperwork, no pressure, no hard sell. Just a welcoming dojo and a brief conversation about what you're hoping to find.

02
Your Child Joins a Trial Class

Your child steps onto the training mat with their age group and tries a real class. Not a watered-down demo. Shy kids relax within 10 minutes. The structure, the movement, and the immediate belonging of a dojo do things that are hard to describe and easy to watch.

03
Sigung James Assesses Placement Personally

After class, Sigung James will speak with you directly. Not a salesperson, not a front desk associate. He'll tell you honestly which program is the right fit and what your child is ready for. If we're not the right school, he'll tell you that too.

04
You Decide — No Pressure, Ever

Your first full week is free. All classes. No contract. No obligation. Most families know by the end of that week. You'll see it in how your child talks about their next class on the way home from the first one.

What happens after you book:

1
Instant Confirmation

Secure your spot in 60 seconds. Immediate email and text confirmation. No waiting, no guessing.

2
Choose Your Time

Multiple class times every week. Your busy family schedule will never conflict with their training.

3
Zero Equipment

Come in comfortable clothes. We provide all training gear. Removing every barrier to getting started.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions parents ask
before their first visit.

These are the questions we hear most from parents in El Cajon and East County San Diego before they visit James Martial Arts Academy for the first time. If you don't see yours here, call us. Sigung James answers directly.

Call Sigung James: (833) 894-0191
What age can my child start martial arts here?
We welcome students as young as 3 years old in our Kosho Cubs program, designed specifically for preschool children. Our programs run through age 17 in the Dragons teen program, and we offer adult classes for 17 and up, with no upper age limit. There is a program for every stage at James Martial Arts Academy in El Cajon.
Do you offer a free trial class in El Cajon?
Yes, we offer a full free first week of training, not just a single trial class. That means unlimited classes in your child's program for seven days, completely free, with no obligation and no contract. Most families know by the end of the week. We're that confident in what happens on the training mat.
What is Kajukenbo and is it safe for children?
Kajukenbo is an American martial art founded in 1947 in Honolulu, one of the first complete mixed martial arts systems ever developed. It was built for real-world self-defense. For children, we teach age-appropriate core techniques (fundamentals), training form (forms), and controlled partner sparring (sparring), all supervised by Sigung James. Every partner drill is designed to challenge students and protect them simultaneously. Our dojo culture of respect means students are trained to protect their training partners, not harm them.
How long does it take to earn a Black Belt?
There is no fixed timeline for belt promotion at James Martial Arts Academy. Belt rank is earned through demonstrated technical merit, character, and consistent training, not through a predetermined schedule or a fee. Sigung James personally oversees all promotions. For dedicated students training consistently, a first-degree Black Belt (First-Degree Black Belt) typically takes between 4 and 7 years. We never sell belts or promote on schedule. Your child advances when they are genuinely ready.
My child is shy and not athletic — is this right for them?
Shy and non-athletic kids often thrive here more than any other student type. Martial arts doesn't reward raw athleticism, it rewards consistency, focus, and willingness to try. The structure of the academy provides exactly the kind of clear, predictable environment that shy kids respond to. We see transformation in these students every year. Your child's first class will tell you everything you need to know.
Do I need to be fit to start the adult program?
No. Adults of all fitness levels are welcome at James Martial Arts Academy. The training itself builds your fitness over time. Sigung James has trained students ranging from complete beginners who haven't exercised in years to competitive athletes. What matters most is showing up consistently and being willing to learn. Your first week is free — come see for yourself.
How much does it cost? Are there hidden fees?
Your trial class is completely free: $0, valued at $99. If your family decides to continue, we'll walk you through all program options and investment details at your trial, no surprises, no pressure. There are no registration fees, no equipment upsells, and minimal belt testing fees. We include a free training uniform for new students when you enroll. Most families tell us the value far exceeds what they expected, the best way to understand it is to come see a class first, no surprises and no pressure. Month-to-month enrollment means you're never locked into a long-term contract.
What if we try it and my child doesn't like it?
That's exactly why we offer the free trial, so your child can experience it before you commit to anything. If after your trial week you decide it isn't the right fit, there's zero pressure to continue. No awkward sales conversation, no hard feelings. That said, we're genuinely confident your child will love it. We've been trusted by 500+ East County families since 2010 because the experience on day one speaks for itself. Most kids ask on the way home when they get to go back.
