The Old Way
Activities that teach skills — but not character.
Sports build teamwork on a good day, but no sport teaches your child how to handle a bully, set boundaries, or stay calm under pressure.
Tutoring fixes grades while the tutoring lasts, it doesn't build the focus and self-discipline that make grades stick.
A yellow participation belt handed out after four classes teaches one thing: that achievement requires no effort.
Without structured confidence-building, shy kids stay shy. Without earned success, kids stop trying when things get hard.
Parents don't want their child to be busy. They want them capable.
What Parents Tell Us · 60 Days In
"My Child Is Different" — What Changes When Your 6–9 Year Old Trains Here
These are not promises. They are what parents describe — unprompted — at pickup, in reviews, and in messages to our instructors. Most families see meaningful change within the first two months.
"They Used to Get Picked On — Now They Don't"
Confidence changes a target. When your child walks into a room knowing they can handle themselves, the dynamic shifts. Bullies move to easier targets. Your child moves on.
"His Teacher Said He's a Different Kid"
The attention-building drills we use on the mat directly translate to classroom focus. Parents regularly receive positive teacher feedback within 6–8 weeks of starting.
"She Actually Earned That Belt"
Our belt system is merit-based without exception. No participation promotions. No age-based advancement. Your child earns each stripe and rank by demonstrating real skill, and they know it. That pride is unshakeable.
"He Has Friends Here — Real Ones"
Partner drills, team challenges, and shared goals build bonds that go beyond the training floor. These are peers who push each other forward, not backwards.
"She Stopped Reaching for the Tablet"
Learn about Kajukenbo movements, they channel physical energy into coordination, timing, and skill. When something is genuinely engaging, screens lose their grip. Parents report this shift within weeks.
"I Don't Worry About Their Safety Anymore"
Your child learns age-appropriate self-defense from a Hall of Fame instructor with 36 years of experience. Low class ratios mean every student gets personal attention. You watch. You know.
What Happens in Every Class
"Is This Just Kicking and Punching — or Will They Actually Learn Something?"
Every 45-minute class is structured around Kajukenbo fundamentals and character development, not free play, not babysitting. Here is what your child practices every session.
-
Kajukenbo Striking Techniques
Proper punches, palm strikes, and blocks, taught with correct form, balance, and control. Physical skill is the foundation everything else builds on.
-
Verbal Self-Defense & Boundary-Setting
"Stop. Back up. Leave me alone." Saying it with conviction is a skill. We teach it explicitly, because words stop most conflicts before they start.
-
Sparring Principles & Safe Contact
Controlled, supervised, padded. Students learn to apply technique with a partner, building real confidence rather than theoretical knowledge.
-
Belt Progression & Goal-Setting
Each belt and stripe maps to specific techniques. Students learn to set a goal, work toward it consistently, and feel the earned pride of promotion.
-
Discipline Drills & Listening Skills
Following instructions precisely, responding immediately, respecting the training environment. This is the behavior that transfers to the classroom and home.
-
Leadership Foundations
More advanced students assist newer ones. This builds responsibility, empathy, and the quiet confidence of someone who knows they have something to offer.
Why This Academy, Not That One
"The Last Place Just Gave Everyone a Belt After a Month"
You've been burned before, the franchise mill with 40 kids and one teenager running drills, the participation belt, the instructor who forgot your child's name. Here is what makes JMAA different.
"The Instructor Doesn't Even Know Her Name"
Sigung Darryl James — 6th-degree Black Belt, Hall of Fame inductee, 36+ years of experience — teaches every class himself. Not a teenage assistant. Not a rotation of certified strangers. The same face, every class. Meet our instructors.
"They Had Kids of All Ages in One Class"
A 6-year-old and a 12-year-old are in completely different developmental stages. Our Kids Martial Arts class is built specifically for ages 6–9, the drills, the pace, the language, and the expectations all match where your child actually is.
"It Felt Like a Factory"
At franchise schools, your child is a monthly fee. Here, Sigung James teaches alongside his family. We know your child's name, their strengths, and exactly what they need to reach the next level. 500+ families over 14 years, not a revolving door. Learn more about our academy.

Questions & Answers
"What If It's Just Like the Last Place We Tried?"
What age can my child start the kids class?
The Kids Martial Arts program is designed for ages 6–9. If your child is 5 and ready, we'll assess at the free trial, some 5-year-olds are ready for this group, others do better starting in the Preschool program first.
Is there sparring? I don't want my child getting hurt.
Controlled partner work begins in this age group, but it is supervised, padded, and taught with strict technique requirements before any contact is allowed. Safety is the first principle of Kajukenbo. We have taught 500+ students since 2010 with an outstanding safety record.
My child has been bullied. Will this actually help?
Yes, and the help starts before any physical technique is taught. We focus on verbal confidence, posture, and de-escalation first. Most bullying targets change when their presence and response changes. The physical skills are the backup, not the primary tool.
How long before they earn a belt?
Timelines vary by individual. We do not have a fixed schedule. Belt promotions happen when Sigung James determines the student has genuinely mastered the requirements, not when a set number of classes has been attended. This makes each rank meaningful.
What if my child wants to quit after two weeks?
We hear this from many parents. Our belt progression system is specifically designed to give students visible, wearable milestones that make them want to continue. Average student tenure at JMAA is over three years. That said, the trial is free, if it's not the right fit, no obligation.
Do you teach kids who have ADHD or attention challenges?
Many of our most improved students came in with attention and focus challenges. The structured, physical, and immediately rewarding nature of martial arts training is particularly effective for these students. Sigung James has 36 years of experience reading each child and adjusting his approach.
